An upbeat Ben Chilwell said he was hopeful he only suffered a minor injury after being forced off during Chelsea’s 3-0 victory over West Ham.
Thiago Silva’s early header and Tammy Abraham’s quickfire double in the second half secured a comfortable win for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge but Chilwell’s ankle injury in only the ninth minute put a slight dampener on the hosts’ evening.
Chilwell – who turned 24 on Monday and has probably had better birthdays – landed awkwardly following a challenge with Jarrod Bowen and Emerson Palmieri came on to replace the England left-back for the remainder of the London derby.
And while Chilwell’s fitness will be closely monitored ahead of the Blues’ trip to Arsenal on Boxing Day, it appears the defender is confident of making a speedy recovery.
‘Back to winning ways,’ the full-back posted on Instagram shortly after Chelsea’s victory. ‘Hopefully injury is not so bad. @tammyabraham 🔥’
Chelsea head coach Frank Lampard admitted after the match that Chilwell was a doubt for the side’s upcoming trip to the Emirates. ‘I expect he will be doubtful for Arsenal,’ he said. ‘He turned his ankle, we will have a scan tomorrow.’
Asked whether it was just the result Chelsea needed after a pair of back-to-back defeats, Lampard replied: ‘Definitely off the back of two defeats against the team of West Ham’s quality and what they are doing at the minute with quality in attacking areas and the way they play.
They are a very effective team. ‘I don’t want to say the performance was bad. It was really good when you think they can do to you with crosses coming in.
‘Our defensive game was great. I wasn’t sure it would be a beautiful game today because there is pressure and they are a good side. ‘The lads dealt with that side of it very well.’
