Genoa have informed wantaway Arsenal defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos to make a decision on his future by the end of next week or they will look to recruit a different player.
The experienced Greek international has been deemed surplus to requirements by Mikel Arteta and hasn’t featured in a competitive game this season, having been omitted from the club’s domestic and European squads.
Sokratis joined the Gunners in the summer of 2108 on the recommendation of Arsenal’s former head of recruitment Sven Mislintat and featured prominently during Unai Emery’s tenure.
The 32-year-old has fallen down the pecking order under Arteta, however, and was told he had no future at the club during the close season but stayed put.
Arsenal are currently well stocked with central defensive options and are looking to trim their bloated squad before the end of the month.
Fellow outcast Mesut Ozil is said to be on the verge of joining Fenerbahce, who also maintain an interest in Sokratis.
Genoa had also been in the running for the former Dortmund and Milan centre-half but are running out of patience with the player.
According to Sky Italia, Genoa currently 19th in Serie, have informed the player’s representatives that they will look elsewhere if he does agree to rejoin the club he represented between 2008 and 2010.
Sokratis has just six months left on his current contract and is free to negotiate with any European clubs over a Bosman move in the summer.
Fellow defenders Shkodran Mustafi and David Luiz are in identical contractual situations, while Calum Chambers’ future is uncertain with the England international only having recovered from a cruciate knee ligament injury which has ruled him out of action for over a year.
