Arsenal target Houssem Aouar will not be leaving Lyon in January as the Ligue 1 side battle for the title in France, but he will be available in the summer if the Gunners wish to renew their interest then.
Aouar was one of Arsenal’s key transfer targets in the summer of 2020, with the France international seemingly close to a move to north London before the transfer window closed.
However, the Gunners ended up signing Thomas Partey from Atletico Madrid and not pursuing their interest in the 22-year-old, despite being very keen on his talents.
Aouar has continued to impress this season, making 14 Ligue 1 appearances and scoring three goals so far this campaign, with Lyon sitting top of the table, three points clear of Paris Saint-Germain.
This title bid is part of the reason that the midfielder will not be going anywhere in January, though, as he looks to win an unlikely trophy with the team he has spent his entire career so far with.
Sky Sports report that Aouar is keen to leave Lyon in the summer and join a bigger club in a more prominent league, but Arsenal may look elsewhere before that.
Mikel Arteta has been linked with moves for other creative midfielders and Aouar’s desire to stay where he is until the summer may see Arsenal move for a different player rather than wait.
The Gunners have been linked with the likes of Norwich’s Emiliano Buendia, Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Brandt and Barcelona’s Riqui Puig.
Arsenal may choose to stick with what they have, though, after the recent impressive performances of Emile Smith-Rowe in the number 10 position.
‘He has a huge potential,’ Arteta said of the 20-year-old.
‘He really wants it and he has the personality when he goes on that field to express and play the way he can play.’
