Ryan has joined the Gunners on loan until the end of the season
Martin Keown has backed Arsenal’s signing of Mat Ryan from Brighton and believes the experienced goalkeeper will be a viable deputy for Bernd Leno.
The Gunners announced on Friday that they have completed a move to bring the Australia international to the Emirates on loan until the end of the season.
Arsenal sold Emiliano Martinez to Aston Villa last summer and signed Alex Runarsson from Ligue 1 side Dijon as their backup goalkeeper.
However, off the back of a calamitous performance in December’s Carabao Cup exit at the hands of Manchester City, the Iceland international is likely to be sent out on loan in January to gain more first-team experience.
Ryan is available for selection for Saturday’s FA Cup fourth-round tie with Southampton, and Keown believes Arsenal’s move to replace Runarsson with the 28-year-old is a ‘good adjustment’.
‘Runarsson didn’t really capture the eye as expected, in the League Cup there was a few mistakes,’ Keown told talkSPORT.
‘I was disappointed to see Martinez leave in the first place when you consider he climbed a mountain to get in the first team.
‘But I imagine they couldn’t afford to keep two first-string goalkeepers financially, maybe they didn’t see that as the right way forward.
‘So this is a good adjustment, Mat Ryan coming in. ’59 caps for Australia, he’s their No.1 goalkeeper, he’s been out of the team at Brighton.
‘He’s coming with good experience and that’s what Arsenal need in the event that Leno gets injured at any point.’
