Kieran Tierney has established himself as Arsenal’s first choice left-back
Arsenal are ramping up their efforts to sign a left-back capable of providing competition for Kieran Tierney.
The Scotland international endured a difficult start to his Arsenal career following his £25million transfer from Celtic 18 months ago but, having returned to full fitness, has emerged as a key component of Mikel Arteta’s improving side.
Despite Tierney’s rapid progress and his increasing influence, Arteta is mindful of the fact his squad lacks cover should one of his star players again succumb to the injury problems that have plagued his career.
The 23-year-old arrived at Arsenal still recovering from a hernia operation and also suffered a dislocated shoulder which ruled him out for a further six weeks last season.
Arteta sanctioned the departure of Sead Kolasinac earlier this month and although both Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Cedric Soares are capable of playing at left-back, that position is not a natural fit for either player.
According to The Evening Standard, Arsenal have identified Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand as a potential summer signing and have also scouted Crystal Palace’s Tyrick Mitchell. Bertrand, 31, has just six months remaining on his current contract and will assess his options in the summer.
The former Chelsea star still lives in London and may find it hard to resist the lure of Arsenal should he fail to agree a new deal with the Saints.
Mitchell, meanwhile, has broken into Palace’s first team this season and gave Arteta a first-hand glimpse of his potential with a superb display in his side’s goalless draw against the Gunners earlier this month.
